Iran Secures Release of Dialysis Medical Cargo Held by U.S. for 95 Days
Iran secured the release of a vessel carrying vital dialysis supplies held by the U.S. for 95 days, thanks to efforts by the Iranian Red Crescent and 17 humanitarian organizations.
An Iranian-flagged cargo vessel, the M/V Touska, carrying vital supplies for medical treatments, was released in late July 2026 after being seized by the United States and held for 95 days since April 20. The cargo included eight containers with materials that could assist up to 44,000 patients undergoing dialysis in Iran.
A month-long humanitarian effort
The release came after the Iranian Red Crescent Society collaborated with 17 international and humanitarian organizations to secure the return of the cargo. Part of the shipment was delivered one day earlier and the rest was completed on July 28, to a company affiliated with the Iranian Red Crescent. The episode occurs amid a context of severe tension between Washington and Tehran, marked by weeks of bombings, a U.S. naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz that has already diverted more than 17 commercial vessels, and intermittent diplomatic negotiations to restore a lasting ceasefire.
A one-time gesture amid the conflict
The release of the medical cargo is seen by humanitarian organizations as a one-time gesture of restraint amid a conflict that has severely affected access to essential medical supplies for the Iranian civilian population, particularly for patients with chronic diseases who depend on regular treatments such as kidney dialysis. The episode adds to other recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing the humanitarian impact of hostilities between the two countries.
