Colombia faces a critical humanitarian emergency following one of the most powerful earthquakes in its recent history on Monday, August 10, 2026. At 07:34 a.m. local time, a violent 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western and central Colombia, causing structural collapses, airport closures, and a massive mobilization of emergency responders.
The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) confirmed the epicenter was located near the municipality of San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, at an intermediate depth between 82 and 103 kilometers. The vast amount of seismic energy released caused prolonged shaking reported across more than 900 towns and felt in neighboring Panama and Ecuador.
Preliminary Casualty and Structural Damage Report
As search and rescue operations continued overnight into Tuesday, casualty figures continued to rise. The unified command center reports over 130 fatalities and at least 570 injured. The most severely impacted urban areas include the Coffee Axis (Eje Cafetero) and Valle del Cauca:
- Pereira (Risaralda): Among the hardest-hit cities, experiencing partial collapses of residential structures, structural damage at Matecaña International Airport, and road blockages.
- Manizales & Armenia: Historical buildings—including the Manizales Cathedral—suffered facade damage, alongside widespread power outages.
- Cali & Valle del Cauca: Structural failures in residential neighborhoods pushed regional trauma centers to maximum capacity.
- Chocó (Epicentral Zone): Initial reports from Quibdó and San José del Palmar confirm destroyed homes and communities isolated by landslides.
National Disaster Declaration and Emergency Measures
In response to the crisis, the National Government declared a “National Disaster Situation”, enabling the immediate reallocation of emergency funds, military deployment for disaster relief, and the setup of temporary shelters. Curfews were enacted in major affected cities to assist emergency response operations.
