Putin repeats the Kremlin’s narrative on the war

Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Western countries of resorting to “terrorist methods” in the context of the conflict in Ukraine, in statements made in July 2026. Putin framed his accusations within the Kremlin’s narrative that blames Ukraine and its Western allies for the escalation of the conflict, while the Russian military continues to report advances on the front, including the capture of villages in southeastern Ukraine, in the Donetsk region.

The context occurs amid mutual attacks between the parties. Ukraine attacked cargo ships transporting Iranian weapons to Russia, which led Iran to threaten retaliation. Days earlier, Kyiv had fired at an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, which caused the death of a sailor according to Tehran and led Iran to summon Ukraine’s charge d’affaires to express its protest.

Military cooperation and tensions on multiple fronts

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov avoided confirming details about Russia’s military cooperation with North Korea, while tensions grow on different fronts of the conflict: cyberattacks, drone strikes, and cross-accusations of violations of international law between Moscow and Kyiv.

In a counter-move, the United Kingdom transferred to Ukraine the intellectual property of a system designed to prevent Russian interference in Kyiv’s drones. The announcement came after a meeting between the British Prime Minister and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, held in Portsmouth. The measure adds to the technological assistance that several Western allies have offered Ukraine to sustain its defense capability against Russian attacks, in a conflict that has now lasted more than four years with no clear signs of a negotiated settlement in the short term.
